I am writing on behalf of my husband's rig. We are Janet and Steve Kraft from Orlando, Florida.
We bought a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport packaged and set out to beef it up. We had seen information and videos from Moab, but did not know much about the rubicon trail. He put a Detroit Locker in the rear, ARB locker in the front w/compressor, 4 1/2" Rubicon lift, beefier gas tank skid plate, diff guards, warn winch, tow hooks front and rear came with the sport package, bead lock wheels, mickey thompson baja claws 35", I'm sure there's more (isn't there always more), but that's all I can think of.
Last year we were talking to other members of The Orlando Jeep Club and decided to go on a trip to Moab and the Rubicon. So September of 2003, 5 Jeeps headed to Moab. We rode trails there for a few days, then 4 Jeeps went to tackle the Rubicon trail. What a great time!!!!! We got there on a Friday afternoon and were immediately amazed by the scenery and the people we met.
Being from Florida we don't get to see mountains and huge trees like you have in California. We started out at Loon Lake Friday night, the Jeep Scrambler that was with us broke a bracket on his steering, so we got him welded so we could get off the trail. We set up camp for the night. Saturday we started out again. We were impressed with the cleanliness of the trail and did our part to keep our trash picked up and pick up any we found (Tread Lightly!). Everyone we met was so friendly and helpful. After riding for awhile the Scrambler's steering came apart again, a "local" had a mig welder and helped us get on our way again. We had such a great time conquering all the obstacles- well the whole trail is obstacles for us! We planned to be off the trail by Saturday night, so we rode hard all day. I think our Yellow Jeep was the only one that had trail damage, our front corner by the side light kissed a rock, so we left some yellow paint behind, but we picked up the pieces of the broken light! We ended up going up Cadillac Hill about midnight, in my case that was probably best after hearing about the drop off...We got back to paved roads about 1:30 or something in the morning on Sunday. One of our Jeeps ran out of gas on the way to Tahoe (we turned right instead of left). We got him towed into town, found a place to shower and sleep then made our way back to Utah.
I think we are planning to go back to the Rubicon Trail in Sept. 2004, and will spend 3 or 4 days, so we can take our time.
I apologize if I got carried away with our information, but visiting the website brought back good happy memories....

Take care, happy wheeling,

Janet and Steve Kraft
