Rubicon Trail Restrictions (50 feet Right of Way)

By Court Order (due to a lawsuit filed in 2005 against the USDA Forest Service), all vehicles must remain within 25 feet of centerline of the Rubicon Trail -- a non-maintained county road.

In other words, the USFS property on both sides of the Rubicon Trail are temporarily closed to vehicles.  You must keep your vehicle within the county easement (50 feet total). Signs are up but are not always reliable. FOTR and county Sheriff personnel try to keep the signage current, but you can't count on it. You must know where the trail is.

Buy books; use a current map; download GPS info from reliable souces; follow the signs; and learn where the real trail is before you go.

Fines range from $175 to $275 or more for violations of the 50 foot easement (25 feet of centerline).

Note: you can camp or walk any where you want; you just can't take your vehicle outside the easement. This does not apply to private property such as the Rubicon Soda Springs area.

Don't Camp on the Rubicon without a Portable Toilet Please!

** It generally takes most people 2 days to run the 12 or so miles of rocks so camping on the Rubicon Trail is something you will most likely do.

** As you think about the fact that you will camp, please keep in mind that your help in keeping the Rubicon open for all of us is very connected to you keeping the trail clean and respecting the space of others. Do unto others, pack out what you pack in, no noise after 10pm, Tread Lightly and all that....seriously. HAVE FUN! But *BE* one of the good guys.

** Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR) is requesting the voluntary use of portable toilets for anyone entering the Rubicon Trail even if only for day use. There are no public facilities in most of the traditional camping areas along the trail. Soon, more and more trails will become regulated to REQUIRE them. FOTR is asking your help to prevent these additional regulations! Not only is it the right thing to do but If you don't have a portable toilet with you soon, you may be turned away at this and other trailheads. **

Camp fires are controlled by USFS Fire Restrictions and the requirement for a camp fire permit. Get one before you go. You can get them at any CDF (California Division of Forestry) or USFS office.
